The Estate Office Boconnoc Lostwithiel, UK
PL220RG
Boconnoc, near Lostwithiel, was a bastion of Royalist support in the Civil war standing out against Parliament at the battle of Braddock Down. In 1717 Boconnoc was bought by Thomas Pitt, former Governor of Madras with part of the proceeds of the Pitt diamond which he had acquired in India and which was later set into the scabbard of Napoleon's sword. Thomas Pitt founded the political dynasty which was to include two Prime Ministers. The façade and much of the internal layout of Boconnoc House was designed by Sir John Soane in his early years. His patron was a grandson of Thomas Pitt who became Lord Camelford. They met on the Grand Tour and Camelford himself became an accomplished architect, designing the Corinthian Arch for his cousins at Stowe. The house is currently being restored and visitors can see work in progress by appointment.
