Twenty-eight acres of gardens in a beautiful natural setting surround one of the finest 18th century houses in Britain. Both garden and house being now owned by the National Trust, although the adjacent woodland gardens of around another 60 acres belong to the family trust, and are also open to the public. The impressive silver-grey stone house features some fine displays of paintings and treasures belonging to the generations of the Carew family. Although the house can be viewed in the colder months, the best time to visit Anthony House and Gardens is of course Spring and Summer, to really make the most of what the truly spectacular gardens have to offer. Guided tours are available but the duration of the average visit is usually about two hours, just long enough to enjoy a leisurely picnic on magnificent lawns that sweep down to the River Tamar, a stroll through the woods, which boast many species of indigenous and exotic trees, and a Cornish cream tea in the delightful Cafe in the East Wing of the House.
